Memorial parade committee seeking nominations

BURTON — The 2012 Burton Memorial Day Parade Committee is currently looking for nominations for grand marshall and veteran of the year now through February. Parade entries will now cost $25 and entry forms will be available online and at city hall. The committee is also in the process of accepting new volunteers; they meet monthly in the community room at city hall. Genealogy expert to speak

BURTON — Guenter Loepertz will be the speaker for the Feb. 7 meeting of the Flint Genealogical Society. He was born in Germany, immigrating to the Rochester, NY area in 1951, residing in Michigan since 1966. He became interested in genealogy in the late 1970s and began "chasing dead people" seriously about 1995. He will be talking about aunts and uncles who moved from Perry, Wyoming County, New York area to Michigan, principally to Flint, Elba, Atlas and Goodrich areas during the 1850s. Ancestor names of his wife's family include Dewitt, Bush, Sanford, Bull, Hoyt, Leddick, McIntyre, and Homan. The Flint Genealogical Society meets the first Tuesday of the month at the Burton Senior Citizens Center, 3410 S Grand Traverse, Burton, just north of Bristol Road and I-475 and behind Holy Redeemer Church at 7 p.m. The meeting is always free and open to everyone interested. The Society is not geared just for Flint as the members represent Genesee County, Shiawassee County, Lapeer County and points all around the area. — G.G.

Bentley garage sale

BURTON — The Fourth Annual Scout Garage Sale will be held in the Bentley Middle School Cafeteria on Feb. 4 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at 1180 N. Belsay Rd. Public invited to MCC student drawing exhibition

FLINT — An exhibition of drawings by Mott Community College's Basic Drawing students is at the Fine Arts Gallery, located in the Visual Arts and Design Center on the Mott Community College main campus, 1401 E. Court St. in Flint. The exhibit will run through Jan. 31. This event is free and open to the public. The drawings for this exhibition were selected by the MCC Art Faculty from work completed during the fall semester of 2011 and represent the broad range of assignments and techniques taught in first semester drawing courses in the Art and Design Department. MCC Fine Arts Gallery hours are 9 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The public is always welcome. Details: Call 810-762-0443. — G.G.
